캐리어에 살아있는 악어 욱여넣은 여행객… 도대체 왜?
독일 뮌헨 공항에서 여행 가방에 살아있는 악어를 넣어 밀반출하려던 미국 남성이 붙잡혔다.
독일 뮌헨 세관은 뮌헨에서 싱가포르로 출국을 앞둔 미국인 남성의 여행 가방에서 살아있는 1m 크기의 알비노 악어를 발견했다. 여행 가방 엑스레이 검사 중 수상한 물체를 발견한 보안 직원이 캐리어를 열어보니 접착 필름에 꽁꽁 둘러싸인 악어가 들어있었다. 악어는 살아있는 상태였고, 코 부분에만 뚫려있는 구멍을 통해 간신히 숨만 쉬고 있었다. 곧장 수의사가 출동해 악어를 풀어줬고, 악어는 현재 뮌헨의 파충류 보호센터로 옮겨져 치료받고 있다. 수의사는 “악어는 목숨이 위태로운 상태였다”고 전했다.
뮌헨 세관 본부는 지난 성명을 통해 “체포한 42세 미국 남성에 대한 소송을 진행한다”고 밝혔다. 그의 혐의는 토종 동물 종 보호 및 동물 복지법 위반 등이다. 그가 야생동물을 싱가포르로 밀수하려는 의도가 있었는지에 대한 수사도 진행 중이다. 안바라시 구팔(Anbarasi Boopal) 싱가포르 동물 보호 단체 ‘동물 문제연구 및 교육협회(Animal Concerns Research and Education Society)’ 부국장은 “밀수범들은 알비노 악어와 같은 희귀 동물을 밀수하면 큰돈을 얻을 수 있기 때문에 범죄를 저지른다. 암시장에서 파충류는 2만 달러(한화 약 2800만원)에서 200만 달러(한화 약 28억원) 넘게 호가한다”고 말했다.
이번에 발견한 알비노 악어는 전 세계 개체수가 100마리에 달하지 않는 희귀종이다. 색소를 합성하는 멜라닌 색소가 없어 온 몸이 흰색을 띈다. 알비노 악어는 높은 희귀성에 밀매의 타깃이 되어왔다. 싱가포르의 한 언론(The Straits Times)에 따르면 알비노 악어는 암시장에서 140만 달러(한화 약 19억원)에 거래된다. 안바라시 구팔 부국장은 “희귀한 동물일수록 더 높은 가격을 호가하고, 이에 따라 멸종 위기가 더욱 높아지는 것이 불법 야생동물 거래의 슬픈 현실”이라고 말했다.
유엔 마약범죄사무국은 최근 발표한 세계 야생 동물 범죄보고서(World Wildlife Crime Report)를 통해 아시아를 파충류의 반출 및 유입이 활발히 이뤄지는 야생동물 불법 거래의 중심지로 지목했다. 특히 중국과 말레이시아는 해외에서 밀반입된 파충류가 가장 많이 발견되는 상위 두 나라다.
